Boundaries: Why Should You Set Them?

Setting boundaries is the best way to make sure that you’re taking care of yourself and staying true to your values.

Boundaries are like fences—they keep us safe from harm, but they also let us know where we end and the rest of the world begins. They help us define who we are and what we need, which is crucial for being able to be ourselves in any situation.

Let’s be honest: setting boundaries is hard. It feels like you’re being selfish and unkind, and it makes you feel guilty. You don’t want to hurt anyone, so why would you put up boundaries?

But here’s the thing: boundaries aren’t meant to hurt people. They’re meant to help them. They’re not about making yourself first—they’re about helping others do things for themselves.

Think of it this way: If someone were in your room, would you let them put their stuff all over your bed or your desk? Probably not! But if someone asked if they could come into your room, would you say no? Of course not!

So why is it okay for us to let others take up our time and space with their stuff? Why are we okay with letting them take up our emotional energy by asking us for help when they know we’re busy or stressed out?

Setting boundaries isn’t selfish; it’s self-care. The more you learn how to set them and stick by them, the better off everyone will be.

So how do you know if you need to set some boundaries? Here are some signs:

-You feel overwhelmed by the demands on your time and energy from other people.

-You’re constantly doing things for other people without getting anything in return (like hours of unpaid labor).

-You feel like the only way to get what YOU need is by taking it from someone else.

-You have a hard time saying no when someone asks a favor of you.

Here are five reasons why we should all be setting better boundaries:

1. Boundaries make you feel empowered because they show that you’re in control of what happens in your life.

2. Boundaries give you a sense of security because they mean that other people are respecting your feelings, needs, and wants—and not taking advantage of or controlling them.

3. Boundaries can help you feel less alone—because knowing that others have similar experiences will help normalize them for you!

4. Boundaries allow other people to know how they’re affecting YOU and how they can better support YOU—so there will be less misunderstandings between people!

5. They give you permission to ask for help when you need it (which makes it easier for others to help out).

Ultimately, it’s up to you to set boundaries and follow through. But here’s the good news: after you dive into the world of setting boundaries and starting to enforce them, they get easier. In fact, they start to become habit at that point.
